Default Two months on

Very nearly two months since my pond has been finished and so far (touch wood) its going well. Enjoying having the pond, love watching the fish. Its a shame the winter is here. The one advantage of building a pond during the winter months and completing before the summer must be having the good weather to look forward to.

The koi are doing very well and the water tests are all good. The only real problem so far is whilst away on holiday we had a power cut. This caused the Nexus to overflow with some of the K1. The Nexus needs to be raised by a couple of inches to stop this happening again. Though since this we have had a new consumer unit installed and a separate one for the pump house.

My eldest daughter who did really well sorting it out, put most of the K1 back in the bio section. So the mechanical side level was too low, though ideally it needed more K1 in there before the powercut.

When we returned from holiday the water clarity was really cloudy. On advice from DaveJ as to the possible cause, I bought more K1 and filled the mechanical section up. After a few days the water was back to being clear as before.

The plan is that next year after doing a very major rebuild on the lounge is to make a growing on tank room. Part of the lounge rebuild involves doubling the size of the patio doors. So we are able to watch the fish from the lounge. Well this is what my wife says, think its a very thinly veiled excuse at getting the lounge decorated!

So from that point of view next year we must buy some more koi to watch.

Hiya Mark

Does make a difference having enough K1 in the mechanical Good old Manor Koi - 50L of unused Biocell for £25.. Bargain Buy.. Thanks to Pete (Fisherman) for spotting this.

As soon as the transfer window opens in the Spring you can start finding Wayne and co a few new friends

Anything you would have done differently?

Dave

Overall I am very pleased with my pond. Fortunately I saw the light and did not just dig a hole and throw a liner in. Which was my original plan but decided to research a bit. Goodness what a minefield I discovered, headspin was an understatement.

Thankfully though here and Crouch Valley I got a clearer idea what was required. Visiting other ponds is such a must and with advice from other koi keepers I have made very few mistakes.

If I was starting another pond build the things I would do different would be:

Have the hole dug for me as this took so much time and would have bought the build forward.

Make the pond window area bigger, its great to be able to watch the fish side on. But wish it was a larger window its a great focal point, everyone comments on it.

Oh and Dave I would build a bigger pond on the lawn and with the aid of a tin hat plus a good solictor deal with the consequences!!

One last thing Dave, Russell (blame my wife for that one) gets deeply offended if he is called Wayne. Says he does not like grannies and will not play with anyone from that team.

Gazza thoughly enjoying the pond.
