The drain should have a plastic ring that sits on the top of the rim of the drain. This will be connected to the rim by a dozen nuts and bolts, or I guess these days, screws. This ring is to trap the liner between itself and the drain.
When you fit the liner, make sure you've got enough over-lap everywhere before attempting to attach it to the bottom drain.
I'd use a non-setting adhesive like Fernox (if they still make it) on both the top of the rim of the drain and the underside of the ring.
Fit the ring and screw it up with the liner still covering the top of the drain. When it is secure, cut round the inside of the ring to remove the excess circle of the liner.
If it is a sheet liner, put bricks round the perimeter to stop the edges falling back into the pool.
Slowly start to fill the pool, gently pulling the sides to remove any unwanted creases, don't fill it too quickly as just a few inches depth will make it hard to move the liner. Don't attempt to secure the edges to the perimeter until the pool is full.
Well, that's how I fitted mine 25 years ago.

Yes this is what it is like......except I didn't want the liner version as it will be in concrete.
The supplier has said its fine to use and you can just remove the top rim? but not sure if that is right? otherwise im left with holes in the rim if I do use it?

Hi Ant,
This is fine to use, it is a universal bottom drain. If you are not using a liner, then leave the top ring off, too allow the fibreglass to lip over the edge.
