well got a phone call today from my partner to tell me i have had my biggest shiro jump out the pond and she found it in the mud right next to the pond all covered in mud. straight away she picked him up and straight into a bowl with clean pond water, 30 mins later she has cleaned the fish up and it started to breath again. what a right mess the fish is in.
what i would like to know is why would fish be jumping this time of the year when i have not had any jump at all in the last 3 or 4 months.
going to do water tests tomo as the only things i have done is take bakki shower off the main pond but then i have cut down feeding loads.
mark

The back tail is damage, it looks like its broken its bottom bone in the tail fin half way up which i know will not heal.fish does look abit of a mess but what can you do apart from hope. will test water tomo evening and may even have to scrape at the weekend which i really could do with out doing this time of year. all other fish look great and this has come abit of a shock to me really.

Given time and decent water there's a fair chance the tail will heal pretty well even if the main ray is broken. Ive nursed a couple with broken rays and you can now hardly spot it unless you are specifically looking for it.
Thanks Dave yes it is the bottom ray that has broken. all other fish look in great condition with not a single mark on them. i must admit being the second time round keeping koi all of them are in good health. will help fingers crossed and let ya know how i get on with the fish and tests.

hi mark sorry to hear about your koi i hope it heals up ok for you and it ....
i had a funny thing happen to my koi regarding jumping i have 20 koi in a 2700 gallon pond although mine are all small at the moment biggest about 6 inches i rarley see them jump just the odd one now and again has a bit of a leap out but about a month ago when we were ejoying a warm spell , we had a few freinds around for a barby my pond is next to decking quite close to the house anyway i had set up the laptop with small speakers to enjoy some music after it had gone dark enjoying a few beers and nice food with music on i noticed a koi jumping then within a few minutes the fish were jumping all over the pond for about ten mins ... i was suprised as they dont jump normally i tested water nxt day ...everythink fine and no problems they havnt jumped since or i havnt seen them jump but strange ....
anyway hope your koi is ok
I think they can jump sometimes, "just for the hell of it."

Sorry to hear about your Koi mate. I know im only just getting into the Koi game but, how do you know there not jumping when your not there or not lookin?, Chances are they jump when your not looking and that they land back in the water.
I know being a fisherman that some spicies of fish including Carp crash out of the surface to clean their gills after heavy feeding, dont know if this is something Koi would do? Anybody any thoughts on this?
