Could someone please explain the process regarding the imports of Koi? As I understand it, Koi are harvested twice a year, yes? I know some dealers are already in Japan, so they buy them now, then what?
Cheers...Freddy.

Yes the dealers are if not already out there are going very soon for the autumn harvest. They will be looking for new stocks to buy and the they will get all the paperwork sorted to get them imported back to the UK.
They are normally boxed up and then shipped out from Japan and arrive in Heathrow in the QT area and all the paperwork is checked and once done they deliver them to the collection point and the fish are loaded up job done.
The only problem is you can hang around in Heathrow for ages waiting Ive waited for hours and hours before now and its a real pain
freddy alot of dealers are out there now , but many dealers will go back and forth most of the year !! , its a good idea to keep checking back with dealers that do this , as some of the best fish can be picked up ,just before the breeders put the koi back in the mud ponds , some serious takeshita can be picked at this time , without the tategoi price tag in the autumn .
as for imports as gazfish said hours can be spent sitting and waiting for koi to clear , my dealer and i have sent messages back and forth at 1am , while he's waiting for them to clear
Hi Freddy , its about April/may time , though this does fluctuate, depending on japans weather , so a good dealer keeps a track of this
this doesn't mean any fish bought at the autumn harvest are crap , Japanese breeders know that us brits are pretty hardcore when it comes to koi , and they do let koi with true potential go in the autumn . i just like the odds on the April /may fish , that have made the cut , but just miss out on going back in the mud pond for another season . it's important to learn your breeders of course , as some have a huge amount of mud ponds , and play the game of it just didn't make the cut , others only have limited space , and they know how many fish a mud pond can take . its the odd fish from the limited space breeders that interest me
i looked up Nishikigoi International , and only found a forum type thing , did you mean select nishikigoi international ?? if so, i highly recommend deron , as he's the ONLY dealer i buy from !!!
as for fish , it really comes down to what you want from a koi , as every breeders has the flavour of koi , and it really is an individual taste thing .
as we all know omosako is a mass producer quality shiro , and i have a few of his fish , but for me , if you put a high grade oofuchi shiro next to an omosako shiro , i'd go for oofuchi , his high quality shiro are far and few and in-between , but when they do come up they really do well for me !!. not saying that omosako dont
for sanke , yohie , is now considered to be one of the best , they grow like weeds , and are very hardy , got quite a few yohie hybrids in my pond on only one has let me down , but still has a great body , skin and beni , he also produces very nice kohaku , ive got a few of them as-well
kohaku , for me was ogawa san , but they guy has retired so searching for snow white kohaku with post box red beni , was an almost impossible task , as most seasoned keepers know , ogawa had a gift at producing kohaku , with all the desired traits , but they did come at a hefty price tag !!
is was this that pushed me in the direction of deron at select , by peter who sadly passed away a few years back . as deron promised the yohie hybrid did fill the void with this new type skin , and deep beni , but as yohies kohaku production is small , another alternative was needed , and this came in the shape of maruyama with the kagura bloodline .
so for me now maruyama kohaku which come from the kagura blood , have exactly what i was looking for , maruyama has done loads of work on his bloodline , and for me a quality kohaku from this breeder is the new ogawa !!
showa , not an easy one to answer , imho , isa , is the showa breeder for me , i very rearly buy showa , i did take a gamble on a tosia the year before last , yes it was a male , but it had qualities of a female fish , so i get the best of both worlds
Yes, I meant SELECT Nishikigoi International. Looking at their site, they seem to have some nice fish, some of them being not too expensive. I quite like the look of the Gin Rin Kohaku they have on this page JAPAN KOI SALES They also have four Kohaku's grouped together further down the page, what do you think?
