Default keeping bakki shower alive

Hi all

what do people think to taking my bakki shower off my pond for the winter and putting it on my QT so i can keep it ticking over. QT is only 300 gallons so how much water should i put over it through the winter to stop it from dieing. i have 5 fish in the QT and will be adding maybe two more small ones from main pond.

Hi Mark,

Why do you want to take it off the pond is it due to the chilling of the water in the winter ?

If so have you thought about enclosing it or getting a shower jacket for it ?

yes it is the reason of the bakki chilling the water in the winter, i have been told before that a bakki shower has to be able to get enough air into it. so if you was to put a jacket around it or enclose it, would this not stop the air from getting to the media and water that is being put over it. this will be the first winter with the bakki so having waited for it to mature in i just dont want it to die back to nothing by turning it off. was more thinking of putting it in the shed on QT but this would be abit of a plain doing. can they be run in the winter with a smaller pump. mark

Hi Mark,

You can get purpose made shower covers that many people use in the winter so the shower will still work OK.

If you did decide to take it off or stop it running you could take out the media and just let it dry out and then next year just put it back in and it will soon kick back in.

would bubble wrap wrapped around the bakki shower be any good to help some it chilling the water. also i take it the water would need to return below the water surface. also would i still have to run 20,000L through it in the winter or should i cut this right down.

Hi Gazza

So if you had my pond which is unheated how would you go about running the bakki through the winter. what things would you change that im doing now. i run 20,000L over it and water falls back to the pond.

Hi Mark,

I think i would get or make a cover for it and give it a go through the winter and see how it goes and see how the temperature is and what if any difference it makes.
