Default bakki showers straight off bottom drain ?

I am about to build a 6600 gallon pond and can't decide on filters, I have read that a bakki shower works best pumped straight off the bottom drain with no need for sieves or uv, has anyone got experience on this and by pumping off bottom drain all the the fish waste will be mashed up and pumped into filter, that must need to be cleaned ? any info is greatly appreciated.

Hi Archie,

I take it you are talking about a Bakki Shower with BHM.

You can run a Bakki Shower direct from a bottom drain but you will not have a clear pond and a Bakki Shower will work better and more efficient if it is pre filtered before it goes over the shower.

Bakki Showers are a great bit of kit and work a treat and if this is a new pond you are building why not have a couple of filters and as you have not yet started building why not get out and see some set ups and in doing so you will see a few systems to give you some ideas on the build.

One thing for sure make sure you plan it out well before you start as its so easy to get carried away and then miss things out.

Hiya

All depends on what you want from your pond, is it for you or is it for the fish?

Thanks for the feedback.

It all gets a bit confusing

One site claims using bakki over BHM will work best for growth and appetite of the koi with no prefilters, even claims no uv is needed,
Does anyone out there do this ? and what are results as in water clarity.

The build of the new pond is all planned out and is no problem at all for me, I will be using 2 spindrift b/d , 1 wide mouth skimmer, it's block and render, easy!

Filters, not so easy, currently have sieve on nexus with 3500 gallons, for new pond of 6600 gallons was set on bead filters with sieves and uv's then read this about the bakki,
With the claims of growth, appetite and activity it all sounds a bit to perfect, any info please!

Thats why i asked if the pond was for you or the fish

You can run a shower only set up direct from bottom drains, in 6600gallons guess that this would be two double showers with 15 boxes of BHM in each and 10,000 gallons an hour over each one.

Fish would love it - but the water would never be clear.

Thanks Dave,
If I have one shower off one bottom drain and then sieve , bead and uv off other bottom drain and skimmer, will this give clear water ? or should I sieve before shower ?

Bakki Showers are good at what they do and yes they can help in getting good growth and great skin

You already have a Nexus so why not put the on a bottom drain and use the sieve on the other drain to the shower ?

You could then have a double set of showers on the other bottom drain using the sieve from the Nexus and fill with 10 boxes of BHM and even pump the skimmer line over the shower as well.

I would plumb in a UV just in case i took my UV out years ago as i never used it but if a do sometime treat the BW the pond does go green for a bit

Thanks Gazza,

I think I will take your advice, I am considering a kinshi sieve (any info please) that will cope with 45,000 l/ph it has 3 inlets and 3 outlets therefore taking 2 b/d and skimmer all through the one sieve.

Now I am right in saying that I can then pump to a shower and also from other outlet through a bead and uv with a mid return.

I do want to heat the pond and have concerns about the shower during the winter, what would be the best way around this and if you shut down the shower during the cold months what do you do to keep the BHM alive.

The nexus and cetus will go on sale, a good set up but I think a bead will be better for a powerful mid return giving a strong current in pond.
