Hi Gaz

I would mature some K1 up before adding it to the Pod, doing it this way you can avoid a load of the problems with a new set up.

Maturing media

Hiya

The best instructions are in an article written by Julian Ward on the MankySanke site;

Fishless cycling

I heated mine with an aquarium heater set at 27C, all you need is a bottle or two of 9.5% Houseshold Ammonia (from Homebase) a KH Ammonia and Nitrite test kit and probably 200g of bicarb to buffer the KH. (Just add a tablespoon if the KH drops below 4 drops)

For the 30L you need for a Pod then a container or 50-60L would be ideal.

As always when maturing K1 best leave in a solution of PP for a couple of days before you start. In 50L you will only need a tiny amount of PP - 0.1gram should be enough.

What i done when i started with the pod is i went and brought a few goldfish and let them start the filter as they are hardy enough to survive, then you can start adding koi when you are on top of the params

Hi

Ive always started a new pond or quarantine with sulphate of ammonia as its far better than risking a suicide squad as i hate this personally.
You will not get all the different strains off bacteria but will get enough to get the pond running and the rest will come over time.
