Default carp pox .

Hi were new to pond keeping and i brought a fish of what i believed to be a repectable dealer and noticed something on its tail . The dealer assured me this was not contagious and was something the fish only get in winter but goes in summer and scrapped it off the fish . I have since found part of this information untrue and we brought this fish in the begining of spring and now one of our other fish we have had for a long time is showing signs . Please can anyone help clear up what carp pox is as ive read conflicting ideas and theres alot of it about here down south is this normal . Thanks for any advice .

Hi Rachel,

I don't suppose you have a picture of this do you as there are other things around as well ?

Carp pox is a funny thing and it can and normally does go in the warmer months and also it seems fish are much more likely to have this when young and most older fish seem to grow out of it. That said on some fish it can be very messy and show up all over the place and although i don't know of any scientific proof i do believe good pond/water conditions and healthy fish will be less likely to suffer from this.

I am surprised the dealer scraped this off the fish as carp pox is not harmful just can look unsightly as said above can go on its own accord. If this is a young fish with a bit of luck it will settle down and grow out of it.

Hi Rachel,

My koi suffer from carp pox & this season has been the worst for me.
Originally I introduced a fish that had it & it has slowly spread to many of them. It is contagious & I believe that my infected fish spread it when it
flashed (scraped itself) on the pond base.

Progressively, as my pond temperature has risen the affected patches have
shrunk with some having disappeared altogether.
Some of my koi have proved to be immune & have remained unaffected for
the past six years.
One of my biggest fish a 50cm/18" Chagoi thankfully seems to have overcome
it & has remained "clean" for the past couple of years. I hope that the rest of
them will follow suit because it can be cosmetically unappealing.

As Gazza said, it is surprising that the dealer cleaned it off your fish.
Most knowledgeable folk advise that it is left strictly alone.

Im in dorset and i personally would never by fish from down here ever again i have been what i feel ripped off by two company`s . My fish in the pond have never scratched or flashed as far as i know . They are very relaxed and are eating well ,there doesn`t appear to be any problems apart from this carp pox . I will attempt to get a picture but as the weather has warmed up its hardly noticeable .

Thanks kingfisher i managed to miss the second section the first time round how lol That has made me feel a bit better knowing that it doesn`t mean its going to effect the rest of our pond .
