Default shower query...

hi guys, i have been asked a question as regards a baki shower, i don't know it so i thought i'd ask on here.

the guy likes the idea behind the shower setup but the wife hates the noise, so the question is this. if he runs a four tier shower system inside his shed, can the water that leaves the last filter pass into a 400 litre tank and then fed by a pump out of the storage tank into the pond subsurface. in principle i think its ok but is he defeating the whole point of the shower system by doing this.

thanks in advance

You don't need a pump to return the water, just a subsurface, large diameter pipe linking the water collection tank to the pond. Water will flow out just like it flows into a gravity fed filter. I'm going to house my shower in an insulated filter house by the pond and have a 4" pipe returning the water subsurface back to the pond.

All your friend will require is to order a Bakki Shower with the spigot tray option, this has a 4" outlet allowing you to direct via gravity the return water back to the pond.

Yep return via a spigot.
Double pumping wouldn't work. If the shower was pumping faster than the return, the tank would overflow. If the tank return was pumping faster than the shower it would run dry and burn out.

Hiya

The only thing that I would add to the comments from the Guys;

You need to give the remote showes as much head as possible above the pond level, particularly if you are running big numbers of water over the shower, my shower is 9" above the pond level.

Best to put in a slide valve (yes they have their uses) in the 4" return from shower, with this you can slow the flow through the return so you dont get gulping of air through the system. Even with around 10,000gallons going over my shower I need the SV 1/3rd closed..

If you want some pics then shout.

The other option to Dave's advice is what I'm going to do. That is to have a container that is filled with water constantly. I'm going to make sure this container allows the water to build up to create a head to push the water through, but even at it's lowest the bottom container will always contain some water. I'm hoping this will stop the sucking in of air without having to restrict the flow. I'm going to make sure I can adjust the height of this container to give me some wiggle room on getting it to run as high as possible without sucking air in but fundamentally this should work.

Yes that will work Ed and save any potential for overflow in the shower!!

thank you for the reply's guys.

i have now been dragged into this "keeping the wife happy project". now i have seen your reply's and now have seen where he intends to place the shower i think that fitting a pump from the lower chamber into the pond is pointless and an unnecessary expence. he has enough height inside the intended building to allow the return to the pond from the storage tank to enter the pond about an inch above the pond surface, thus having no noise and aiding the room around the filter stack if any maintenance is required.

my only thought is, has the whole point of using a shower being lost by returning the filterd water via a storage tank.

thanks

No when the shower media has matured the water in the tank will be biologically enhanced. However the tank would need a drain fitted to remove sediment every so often and to drain down if the shower was off for a long period (IE winter) or the water would become stagnant.
