It's never too early to start thinking about over-wintering.
I'd be interested to learn how others prepare for and over-winter their fish, particularly if they regularly successfully manage this, without the addition of heat.

I shutdown trickle tower & vegfilter, reduce aeration, remove UV,fit slower pump, insulate all exposed pipework, fit covers to pond & filter(leaving access for gas exchange) & hope that it will be benign winter.
i give pond a good clean up with a last water change theni turn off filters and pumps(not the air pump though) lift air stones to just under the surface (this stops that area from freezing) then place polystrene sheets over 70% of the surface then cover the whole with garden fleece
No filtration over winter I leave mine running as they are now, on 24/7, just don't need to clean them out so often. My pond is currently un-heated and the fish came through last years' freeze ok with the filtration on

Not sure there is much difference in "best practice" between Guys that run unheated systems and those that have a heater?
I don't disturb fish in the pond unless I have to - except pre winter when I spend an hour or two pulling a few fish out to have a scrape to check that the fish are clean; best done whilst the temps are still warm enough to do something about it.
