being new to this great hobby I am like a sponge and want to learn learn learn, I totally enjoy the fish and now have another reason to be dissapointed when the winter moves in, can any one out there give some advice on heating the pond, I have read that it's good for the fish to become dormant but does it have to be for the whole duration of our long winters, It would be great to enjoy the fish for 10 months of the year, also gave up smoking so have funds to heat pond, A good swap I'd say.

Heating - Is more about controlling the fishes environment, but it can start to get expensive, there’s a balance between the value of your stock and the risks you wanna take.
In the summer if you want fish to grow then they need a summer.
In the winter, when water temps get below 6C things start to get uncomfortable for the fish, anything below 2C then you are on a knife edge.
In the autumn and particularly the spring when the fishes immune systems are not at their best, peaks and troughs in pond temps can be ironed out with heating.
Pond problems; sometimes heat is needed.
Overall my take desirable to have something in the locker just in case; how you use it is down to you.
dave's absolutely right, if your after growth or healing koi from scrapes or banmgs etc, heat is imperative. give them a winter or as some do keep the thermostat set at 8 so it doesnt drop below and get really uncomfortable.
i also like to use my heater in the spring to bring the pond up through 10 to 16c quicker so the bugs dont gain strength quicker than my koi's immune system
Thanks for the advice and direction on this one, Gonna take the plunge and get a duratech dura plus 7, costly but with power supply only going one way this will pay fer it's self in no time and of course I can enjoy the fish for a longer period of time and as you mentioned have control over the pond resulting in healthy fish. Thanks Again.
