Reputation Level: | Oxygen level....? Hi, last couple of days my koi has been acting a bit strange....? only swimming in one area, near the venturi & waterfall...? close to the surface. could it be the oxygen level low.....? I've order a testing kit off ebay today so I'll check readings when it arrive in a couple of days.
I have a 45ltr per minute air pump connected to the venturi running 24/7.
12500ltr pond (10ft round pond - 4.5ft deep)
2 x 15000 UVC fishmate filters
10000lph surface pump
Venturi/waterfall return
45lpm air pump
Is my air pump to small.....? Do I need to upgrade.....?
I've placed a second pump and airstone in to see what happens.
Fish are feeding well and other reading are bang on..... any advice

Reputation Level: | It could be that the filter is under-performing? I had the same just a couple of weeks ago, reminding me that I needed to clean out the filter etc. Within an hour of this the fish seemed quite happy and have not seen the same since. Hope this helps. |

Reputation Level: | Hi Miles41, I've cleaned out the filters last weekend so it can't be that. I have just read that thunder storms can remove oxygen from ponds and we had one about 3 nights ago......could be linked. |

Reputation Level: | Yep, could be, although after last weeks deluge, this didn't seem to have an effect?
My pond just has the return water from the filter, just 'splashing' in to drive air into the water and this seems to work for me.
Have you tested your water for nitrates, amonia etc? |

Reputation Level: | it could a be a multitude of things , though thats sounds in its self really negative , so forget i said that
now to put it better !!
the reason they are all swimming in one spot , have been covered in the thread its that horrible time of year , though the weather has been right shite all the way through !! its now the night temps we need to watch , as koi produce ammonia 24/7 365 . the coldest part being the first few mins before sun up , sooooo it could be tiny spikes of nitrite , that cause the koi to swim in high oxy places to get it out of there system ,also its lay down time for fat on the koi , that means there system will need more of everything , including oxygen , so its just that awkward time of year when the koi act a bit strange !!! so just watch for flicking , as it could be the reading are off slightly , here and there through the night and day , or should i say cold spots during a 24hr period , also its the time when the kois system is affected by photo-period , and there going slightly off balance , so it's realy important if you see any flicking flashing , have a parasite check , as its still warm enough to do a quick treatment , so there clear or clearer for next season .
so eagle eye time and double check everything
