if your filter is off for a day no your bacteria wont die............... come on be real.

i have done work with ntlabs a well known koi treatment company. they as all the others test there gear in lab's they add the bact and the feed in one bottle why do you think it has to be used by a certain date...... after this date yes its no good. e-mail them if you want and see what they say ..................

are you one of these people that think in winter temps you have no bact in your filter ??????????????????????????????? beware of many myths

A filter can be shut down the medai removed and as long as there is still moisture for the bacteria it can stay alive for months as it maultiplys others die off so the new as a new food sorce again and this will keep going on till the medai is compleatly dryed out and the bacteria in a bottle as added protiens and nitrate's for it to live off and as it dies it to becomes a food sorce but as koi master said it only has a limited amount of time as it also requires oxygen i hope this helps you to understand how it works

Default bacteria

Bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) dont die that quickly. But you can knock back your numbers by allowing a filter to sit without sufficient air supply. No probs for a few hours but several days not advisable. You wont kill everything but best to keep your filter running. The bacteria converting nitrite to nitrate tend to be most oxygen sensitive. Twenty four hours is unlikely to lead to any significant problems. Over the winter same thing happens. You will loose some bacteria from your system, but they quickly recover as the temperature rises and you begin to feed your koi again. Assuming you dont heat your pond of course. . Generally these types of bacteria also have an ability to go dormant to some extent which helps their survival, particularly when food source is low.
