Default Pond change in the winter

Hi

I have a pond with Koi Carp in it is around 5000L I have just compleated and extension to the pond which now makes it 10,000L I have now filled the extension, this does not have a direct link into my old one at the moment but will have.

The question I have will moving the Carp at this time of year harm or even kill them?

Regards

Steve

hi steve welcome to the forum ,

i would say wait to move your fish , as the temp fluct's at the min could cause swimbladder problems .and also you new bit is smaller so they will be affected by diffrent conditions in the new pond , so i'd say hold your horses till the spring
regards steve

lolz we've all done that !!

i'd still wait, till the weather warm's up , then just treat it like a new system , a few in at atime . biuld up slowly , what filter's and pumps do you have on the new ext ??

I have added a second Hozlock to my extension I am not sure without looking but both of them pump around 6000L per hour. I have a ridge in the middle so I have crossed my pumps, eg the one on the left pumps to filter for the right hand extension and visa versa

I agree with Ogawa only,
assuming we are talking of temporary vats to knock the ponds into one,
the wind chill factor at this time of year would be horrendous for temp vats, even if heated,
also getting bacteria to grow on pond walls and base, and in new media, is nigh on impossible unless heated to 16C
Also so called " new pond syndrome " problems would be harder to deal with in cold weather / water !
Peter.

Hi Folks

My plan was to fill my new extension get the water to the same temp as my old one, remove the fish to the new then to take my liner through to the old one. It does seem however that spring would be the best time for the this

If you are heated, it's risky, but possible,
if cold, I can't see you starting the bacteria and getting it cycling properly,
with correct and stable ph, kh etc.

" Welcome ! " by the way
Peter.

I have introduced about 30 fish to my pond over the last month with, as far as I can tell, no adverse affect. This has been due to fish being cheap and some friends of mine wishing to thin thier stock.
I was always led to believe that winter was the best time to move fish! are Koi different to any other fish?
The only fish I have lost found its way into the skimmer The cold water does not bother me if they are comming from outside and going to outside. A little caution should be exersized if moving from inside to outside(ie, from a shop to a pond).
Sounds like health and safety gone mad bought down to Koi level.
