Welcome to the forum !
You should be proud of yourself !

" Look after the water, and the Koi will look after themselves "

that's the best advice Ive ever had !!!!

It's not a bad thing to change 10% of water per week,
so long as you de-chlorinate the replacement water.
otherwise as koimaster says ... if it ain't broke, don't fix it !!!

What filtration do you have etc ?
Peter

No disrespect to your wife, BUT let her read her ladies magazines,
and you subscribe to the monthly koi mags " koi carp " " koi "
and look in on here !
You could also join your local bkks section ( you would get to see other members ponds, and they are likely to have a local Koi healthcare specialist among their members ! )
Many of our ladies do not appreciate how addictive Koi keeping is !
and with that comes a hunger for knowledge !
You keep reading my friend, and don't forget to look in on here regularily,
Koimaster is putting some VERY good threads on here at the moment re: Koi healthcare and treatments.
Don't be afraid to ask anything, we will ALWAYS try to help,
we learn from each other's experience and from each other's mistakes.
There are also some very good DVD's on sale,
look at Koi Videos @ Koi Keeper.com
Peter.

Koi will dig in the plant baskets and rip the plants apart and eat them, and eat the roots ! If the soil in the basket contains nutrients this will not only pollute the water, it will fertilise and encourage green algae and the dreaded blanket weed !!!!!
Koi and plants do not mix.

I have seen Koi in man-made Lakes where the National Water Lily collection is held, but on closer inspection, the lilies were fenced off from the koi under the surface, to keep them away !

Wild carp will dig and rumage all day, so will Nishikigoi given the chance,
they have been referred to as aquatic pigs, because of their behaviour !
Peter.

ps the air stones would be better the other way round, 3 in media, 1 in pond !
