things look worse for the pond. Ph dropped abit from 7.6 to 7.2 cos it's been raining. Nitrite 0 Nitrate 50. KH 3 GH between 6 &10. Using tetra pond quick test sticks. Ammonia .25mg/l putting more bacteria in filter.
Most of the bigger fish are now lethargic, not feeding and our sanke has red skin on his white patches on his back he has scales, our scaleless sanke also has red skin along his dorsal. We have an orange koi that appears to have redden skin on the outside of it's gills. We are worried that we are going to lose all of them!! if this is all down to the ammonia problems that we are having, can they recover? do you have any ideas of what we can do? The pond bottom is quite clean as we hoovered it during our water change last week, we changed 1/3 as the ammonia was 1.5mg/l. The ogon died after going off it's food two weeks ago. |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: fish that wont eat - the outcome The ph dropping to 7.2 is good news as long as its stable as the ammonia will be less toxic, also 7.2 is great koi ph. The ammonia is certainly at a better level and as long as it keeps coming down it should not be of to much of a problem.
The koi could be showing signs of stress as the ph has changed and there is still ammonia in the pond, but they could also be coming down with something, do you have a microscope as I would also do a scrape and see if there is anything on them.

Rep Power: 0 | Re: fish that wont eat - the outcome no we haven't got a scope. they are not flashing now that the ammonia is dropping and don't appear to have any visable problems except not really swimming or eating that is!.
If they have been damaged by the high ammonia is it fatal or can they recover?
Will have to try and get a fish to a dealer in totton that i know will scrape fish but if there is anyone in southampton that would be kind enough to help us scrape we would be grateful.

It depends how bad it got, but it should not be fatal as long as the ammonia keeps getting better and they do not go down with anything else.
You just need to keep an eye on them.

these were taken after this fish had been out of the pond for about half an hour. The greenish lumps were slime that could be wiped off but looked like it took a small amount of skin with it when you did this.
apologies for quality of pics, don't think csi will be calling us any time soon he he.
In case anyone was puzzled by this post, this fish had died earlier in the day and before the pictures were taken.

Rep Power: 0 | Re: fish that wont eat - the outcome Hi the fish in the pictures seem to have what my fish had recently(cotten wool desiese)but I could be wrong as I'm new to koi any way I treated mine with a salt bath and actoflavin worked a treat no more fatalities.you need to bring the salt levels up slow day 1 1.5 k per 220 gal (ton of water) day 2 1.5 k per 220 gal day 3 2k per 220 gal this will bring the salinity level up to 5% use actoflavin as directed.I treated whole pond for a weak and then changed the water over a few days,if your using salt take any plants out, don't use table salt as it has additives to make it flow better, use baking salt that you can buy from any bakers it cost me 6 pound for 75 k so well worth asking your locl bakery.Hope this helps |
