Good topic Carla
I visit a local wet centre kinda olde fashioned type place where the owner will sit ya down and give ya cups of coffee
He has a sign on the wall saying "Pond is spelled PATIENCE" and how true that is we have all fallen into the trap build it fast and fill it fast then the filters and water suffer So MY bit of advice would be build it big n deep fill it with water and then slowly add fish and let it mature naturally

Good advice Mik Mine would be don't put anything in the water unless you know that its safe.
That includes fish (QUARANTINE), also dont go throwing chemicals and treatments into the water at the first signs of a fish flashing or sulking, first check the water perameters then examine and scrape the fish for damage or parasites, and only treat the water when you know what you are treating for.

Hi John, sounds very sensible aswell, i think too many of us are guilty of panicking and throwing stuff into the pond before investigating properly.

Hi Carla good topic.
You always get top tips from these two boys
Mine would be to have as much filtration as You can. Scrimp on Your filters and You are weeing in the wind. I think this is how we loss many hobbiest, they set there ponds up fill them with fish throw food at them, the filters cant cope, and the problems start. After a couple of years the pond is filled in and they have a rockery instead. :'(
My other bit of advise I would give is You must have a current on Your pond. This keeps Your Koi active, Gives better body shape, there matabalism is running healthy, they feed better, all these factors point to healthy strong Koi.

hi Justin,

Thankyou, i fully agree with what your saying, our fish have been in a holding tank while the new pond as been built, and we threw the nexus easypod on there to get it matured and it really creates a current and the fish go crazy they love it and ive never seen tham so active ;D ;D

Thanks Carla

i think its brilliant when you find a dealer who's just happy to pass on their knowledge and show you what they've got, without them trying to flog you everything in sight regardless of wether or not you need it. Theres a place called coldwater collection thats a lot like this aswell full of advice nothings too much trouble, he even caught a fish and gave it a scrape for me too look at under the microscope, i dont know about anyone else but id much rather give my money these guys who are true hobbyists first, than those who are just in it for the money. Thanks for that Mik. ;D ;D
