Default Fish transportation with or without oxygen !!!

Hi all,
Just a quick query really more curiosity that anything. Does any body know how long fish will survive double bagged for transportation without the addition of pure oxygen being added to the bag. Somebody asked me the other day and i couldnt really answer them with a definate answer. Obviousy it depends on number of fish in the bag and also percentage of water to air in the bag and probably temperature.
How far have you travelled with a fish that you have collected without adding oxygen?

cheers guys

Lee.

Hi,

I would be very careful transporting fish in any quantity for a fairly long period of time.

I had a very close experience last year. I was packing 50 small koi (around 6inch) to be taken to a show 15 miles from my house. I bagged 25 fish in one bag (bearing in mind these fish had come 30 hours from Japan 60 in a box), and started catching the other 25 fish and putting these in a bag.

I left the first bag with 25 fish and water, floating in the pond with a bowl of water holding the edge of the back. In the short space of time it took to catch 25 fish, I had maybe 20 fish looking dead!!!

Pure oxygen was used in a large bowl to bring these round. I now pack all fish PROPERLY every time.

Double bagged and oxygenated and in the dark.

hi lee , ive picked up koi from 90 miles away with no oxygen and just trapped as much air in big bag as possible , due to traffc jam took 3 hrs to get home , i was s***ing myself lol , but fish was fine, any travel over 1 1/2 hours and i would not advise it , specially with big fish anyway.
