Chris | I know someone that built a singleĀ* pond wall out of 4 inch concrete blocks, about 3 months down the line, one of the corners gave way and he lost every one of his Koi.
Im also a builder by trade and do not recommend anyone builds a single 4 inch wall to hold any great amount of water, when I built my Pond I made it 9 inches with the rear wall between the pond and filter bay 18 inches, all reinforced with steel rods.
9 inches minimum and there are no exceptions if you value your koi........... | 4 inch is alright as long as it is under 40 square feet (surface area) and no more than 2ft 6 high . so if you want to keep tadpoles use 4 inch |

Reputation Level: | Re: Pond Construction (theory side) Our first pond is 4inch wall, still standing, 4ft deep, after 10 years.
I've done all the tests, all the theory, and have the experience - i aint had one fall down!

Reputation Level: | Re: Pond Construction (theory side) Im not critising your calculations, but when you do 9 inch block work below ground level, you are suppose to back fill the area between the ground and blocks so that there are no hollows and to give them support, so how can a 4 foot high 4 inch brick wall be ok with nothing supporting it ?
Im no professor of maths and if you have done structual calculations that says this, thats fine and Im not going to argue, but Im not sure I would take the chance, I just cant see that a 4 inch wall is suitable, I wouldnt even build my front garden wall that size, no offence. |

Reputation Level: | Re: Pond Construction (theory side) all council regulations on brick work state that 4 inch should be built no more than a meter high and that is a garden wall that is not supporting anything. i wouldnt trust a 4 inch wall to hold any large amount of weight i would definetly go 9 inch and as extreme said make sure you back fill with a concrete slurry mix , but most iimportantly of all make sure you have no hollow joints in your blockwork and make sure your compo isnt of a stronger mix than the blocks that you are using .go with 4 inch flat ( alot easier than 9 inch hollows ) your compo should be a 5 and 1 mix with a touch of feb mix plasticiser just to make it easier on your self also.( get yourself a decent brickie if i werent so far away id offer my services) dont forget to lay a decent concrete ring beam around the pond should be 9 inch deep and 12 inch wide with some rein fibers for good luck . cheers paul |
