Reputation Level: | Koi and Pond Plants Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone else has suffered the same problem as I have this weekend. I purchased 2 plant baskets with a variety of pond plants and put them in my pond the following day my pond looked as if someone had thrown 50 bags of mud in my pond. I left it overnight and it cleared up a little bit but I was confused how my water could go from crystal clear with PH readings of 7.5 and nitrate and ammonia readings of 0 rocket to 8.0, 0 and 0 respectively.
I new it had to be the plants so as I said I left it overnight and this morning seen the pond has started to clear up and the soil and roots of the plants clearly visible. I caught 4 of my largest koi attacking the roots of these plants like they haven't eaten in years causing the aquatic soil to cloud my water.
I intend to add clear pond to clump the particles and make it an easier job for my filters and get the pond vacuum out to clear the spilt soil on the bottom of the pond.
Have anyone else had problems similar with their koi and pond plants??? Look forward to hearing your response/s. |

put the plants in pond peat and place in a hession sack or somthing similar and then cover in pond gravel as the koi will route around the gravel but wont be able to attack the roots. this should also keep the soil/peat in place and give the roots time to grow. i hope this helps
cheers ,....vince |

We had the same thing with our koi, it was just the lillies they liked all the pads had holes in and were ripped off, and every day we went out it had been thrown off its ledge into the bottom off the pond. we took it out in the end and put it in a vat of water to recuperate, but we didn't bank on one of our dogs taking a liking to it an ate the lot, needless to say it would have been safer with the koi!
