Default Filter Cleaning in the Winter

Hi everyone,

This is my first winter with my new un-heated pond (3,000 gravity fed), during the summer I cleaned the vortex and flushed the remaining chambers each week - do I still need to do this through the winter ?

Thanks

Default Re: Filter Cleaning in the Winter

Hi Paul,
During the summer months you was probably flushing your filters atleast once a week, there is no need to flush your filters out as often in the winter months as you will be feeding them very little if at all when it gets very cold. However, your Koi will still produce waste (ammonia) and your filters will still collect debri, I would still flush your filters every couple of weeks depending on your stocking levels. If you find there is not alot of waste when you flush, you could probably leave it for 3-4 weeks, but I would leave them no longer than this. Good husbandry of your filter is still important through the winter months. Hope this helps.
