Not sure if it was me who was "being sarcy" but "bottom drain is the only way to go" was not meant to be a sarcastic comment. Having run with a bottom drain for a year, I had to do without it for a week or two and use 3 pumps instead whilst I fitted an RDF to the bottom drain.

The transformation in water quality was gobsmacking. Water quality ie ammonia and nitrate suffered, (maybe moving the K1 killed a few bugs). The water became cloudy with lots of poo floating around. Lots settled around each pump and I had to resort to vacuum cleaning the bottom, this I have never had to do before.

Now I am back on the bottom drain I have sparkly water again.

Water without bottom drain for 1 week

Water quality with same filter on a bottom drain.
