Default block built filters

Want a new filter system 4 when the weather improves in the spring.was thinking of building one from the blocks I have left over from pond.I currently use 2 modified box type filters for bio and a water butt with brushes for mechanical .can't afford a nexus etc I'm a self employed builder n work is slow.want 2 use the mature media i have for what I decide to go with just adding more of it k1 etc.just wondering if people would recomend block built or go down the root of a diy easy etc? Cheers
