Reputation Level: | building a home made filter box Dear Members.
I am constructing a pond 8ft/6ft/4ft which will hold roughly 1200 gallons.
I am working on a budget and have been told to buy a Nexus Easypod filter for the koi I want to stock. These filters are way too expensive for me so I thought about making a filter box of my own.
Can anyone please advise as to how the best way to construct one is using what vessel and media etc. |

Reputation Level: | Whats your budget for a filter?
as there may well be a filter you can buy with your budget as we all know a wide range of filters

I was looking at adding a second filter to this |

I was thinking of buying 3 plastic storage containers of a decent size and using a hole boring drill bit making a hole through each one for the water to pass into each chamber and then a final hole at the end for the outlet, using 3inch pipe all the way.
What do you think? |

Reputation Level: | Having built a 3 chamber filter myself (using cold water tanks before they were expensive) the problem I found is that the sides of plastic products not built specifically for pond projects are never vertical and so you have to force them into position. If there is sufficient movement without over-stressing the plastic in the container you choose then that's fine, but it does make it tricky. I used 2 x 25 gallon tanks of brushes and 1 x 50 gallon tank of flocor (with a mechanical pre-filter before the 1st chamber) on a 2000 gallon pond with ~15 foot long Koi and it works fine.
Be aware though that the mistakes you make in making the filter up will eventually add up and it may have been easier in the long run to buy 2nd hand or even new. And purpose built is more likely to look nicer if we are all honest
I can give you text description of what I used if you are interested.
Good luck anyway,
Mike. |

on my last pond i made my own 6 bay filter system for a 4000 gallon pond, i used 50 gallon loft water tanks, they worked awesome. all i did was put in a plastic grid in the bottom and flocor for the media. i linked 3 bays together and then the other 3 bays. as long as you put the feed into the top with matting and then return from the bottom it will work ok.dont forget to put a waste pipe into it as well.just wanted to say of this way coz its cheap and works well.

Reputation Level: | Really does depend on your budget. I've been building filters for my quarantines out of 200 litre barrels. They stand around 4 feet high and are 2 feet in diameter. Fantastic for kaldnes and great for drop in mechanical filtration as you can drop a standard bin straight in the top. I'm really going to have to take some piccies but I get them from this seller... eBay My World - ibcextreme
They also have sealable lids just in case you wanted to do some kind of pressure arrangement.
I'd go Bakki, but I can't put up with the noise and the supercooling of the water if it's outside would just send me over the edge with worry. They are fantastic filters though.
