you can have plants if you want a natural pond as long as they are marginals
pot up in the black solid plastic tubs with holes in the bottom stops the koi sucking every thing out (get them in the garden centres )
do not use floating or oxygenating plants or they will be gone in no time
I have used this method for years and the plants regrow every year
or have them all in a veggie filter they cannot reach them there keeps the nitrate down naturally
