Right the salt to use is pond salt most koi/fish shops sell it in 25kg bags but not salt you buy in the supermarket!! you will need 2 bowls that are both big enouth that the fish will fit 1 with just pond water and the other with pond water but desovle 3oz of salt per every gallon of water in it so if you only put 1 gallon add 3oz 2 gallons 6oz and so on make shore you have an air stone in each bowl then catch the fish with out streeing it out to much palce in the bowl with no salt let it setel then lift it up and transfer to salted bowl but make shore all the salt is desolved as undesolved salt can burn the fish's belly and fins leave the fish in there for 10 min's he may toss around for a bit but he will soon setel after the 10 min's are up trancfer it back to the bowl with just pond water for a min then it can go back in the pond but dont pore any water from any 2 bowls back in the pond. This wont help the pox but it should help it's tail look better this can be done every other day if feel it needs it but try not to strees it out to much hope this helps

PS as bcfc said what test kit do you use as some are a load of cr@p ie the test strips the one you will want is the api fresh water test kit with all the little bottles of solution
